How binaural beats work (and why you need headphones)

Play a 200 Hz tone in your left ear and 206 Hz in your right, and you'll hear something that isn't in either ear: a slow, steady 6 Hz pulse. Your brain creates it.

The illusion, explained

When each ear receives a slightly different frequency, the brainstem circuits that compare signals between your ears (normally used to locate sounds in space) register the difference as a rhythmic beat. That perceived rhythm equals the difference between the two tones: 206 − 200 = a 6 Hz beat. This is called a binaural beat, and it only exists inside your head — a microphone in the room would record nothing pulsing at all.

This is also why headphones are essential. On speakers, both ears hear both tones, the difference is physically mixed in the air, and the effect collapses into an ordinary (monaural) beat. True stereo separation is the whole trick.

The frequency bands

The beat frequencies are chosen to mirror the brain's own activity bands, as measured by EEG:

The idea — called entrainment — is that a steady external rhythm nudges brain activity toward the same tempo. So you'd pick a delta or theta beat to wind down for sleep, alpha to relax while staying awake, beta or gamma while working.

What the science actually says

Honesty matters here: the research is mixed. Some controlled studies report reduced anxiety and easier relaxation with slow binaural beats; others find no effect beyond ordinary calming audio. Effects, where found, are modest — a gentle nudge, not a switch. What is uncontroversial: slow, steady, unchanging sound is genuinely conducive to relaxation and sleep, and many people find the low pulsing of a delta or theta beat deeply settling regardless of the entrainment debate.

A fair way to treat binaural beats: a focus ritual and relaxation aid with a plausible mechanism and low cost to try — not a medical treatment.
