Brown noise vs. white noise vs. pink noise: which helps you sleep?

They are all "static" — but they feel completely different. The difference is where the energy sits across the frequency spectrum, and that changes what each color is good at.

What "noise color" actually means

Noise colors are named by analogy with light. White noise contains every audible frequency at equal intensity, the way white light contains every color. Shift the energy balance toward the low end and you get "warmer" colors — pink, then brown. It's not marketing: these are precise signal-processing terms.

White noise — the classic masker

Equal energy at every frequency. To the ear it sounds bright, hissy, a little sharp — like an untuned FM radio. Because it covers the whole spectrum evenly, it's the most aggressive sound masker: sudden noises (doors, traffic, a partner's alarm) have to compete with energy already present at their frequency, so they wake you less easily.

Best for: noisy environments, light sleepers, masking high-pitched sounds like tinnitus for some people.

Pink noise — the balanced one

Pink noise reduces the intensity of higher frequencies (energy falls 3 dB per octave). The result sounds like steady rain or wind through trees — full, but not harsh. Because our hearing perceives octaves logarithmically, pink noise actually sounds more even to humans than white noise does. Several small studies have linked pink noise during sleep to more stable slow-wave (deep) sleep, though the science is still young.

Best for: people who find white noise too sharp; steady all-night background.

Brown noise — the deep rumble

Brown noise (also called red noise) rolls off high frequencies twice as fast (6 dB per octave). What's left is a deep, smooth rumble — a waterfall heard from inside a cabin, a jet cabin, distant thunder. Many people describe it as the most "physical" and calming of the three, and it has become especially popular in the ADHD community as a focus aid, where users report it quiets mental chatter. Formal research there is limited, but the anecdotal consensus is strong.

Best for: relaxation and focus, people sensitive to hiss, masking low rumbling noise like traffic.

Green noise — the middle of the road

"Green noise" is a looser term: noise centered on the middle of the spectrum (roughly 500 Hz), where most natural ambient sound lives. It sounds like a steady natural background — somewhere between pink and brown — and is a good pick if you want something neutral that resembles nature without any actual events in it.

How to choose (a 3-night experiment)

  1. Night 1: pink noise at a volume just above your room's background level — quieter than you think it should be.
  2. Night 2: brown noise at the same perceived volume. Notice which one you stopped noticing faster — that's the winner.
  3. Night 3: layer your winner under one natural sound you love (rain, fire). A noise bed plus one organic texture masks better than either alone, because real-world interruptions are unpredictable in frequency.

Volume matters more than color. Masking works at surprisingly low levels. If you can comfortably talk over it, it's about right; if it feels "loud", it may fragment your sleep instead of protecting it.
